Meet   Nissa Erickson-Geisness - Certified Nurse Midwife

Close Midwife Profile
Nissa Erickson-Geisness - Midwife in Denver

Nissa Erickson-Geisness has spent the last decade working to improve women's and children's health. She is a board certified nurse midwife and nurse practitioner with masters degrees from University of Colorado in both the Midwifery and the Women's Health Nurse Practitioner programs. She has bachelors degrees in Nursing and Women's Studies from St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota. In 2000 she launched her nursing career as a perinatal nurse at a hospital-based birth center in the Twin Cities. During this time, she also studied health care in India and volunteered at a children's orphanage in Central America. In 2004 she moved to Colorado and helped open the University of Colorado Hospital's Birth Center as a charge nurse, spending five years serving on various committees to improve patient and family centered care.

Nissa's passion for midwifery began early in her life, when she was present at the midwife-attended birth of her younger sister, Kate, after tagging along to the prenatal visits and Lamaze classes. She is dedicated to advocating for women and their families, by empowering them to make their own informed health care decisions and by providing sensitive patient-centered care, regardless of age, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, or socio-economic situations. She is respectful of the unique needs and choices of women throughout pregnancy and birth, and through various life stages, from adolescence to menopause. Her clinical interests include preventive women's health, adolescent care (both gynecology and teen pregnancy), patient and family centered birth, and breastfeeding.

Nissa and her husband, Gabe, live in Highlands Ranch where her big heart extends to animals-they have adopted two retired greyhounds and rescued a pair of precocious cats. She loves traveling, animals, live music, and anything outdoors, especially camping and skiing. In her spare time she tries out Food Network recipes, volunteers for Colorado Greyhound Adoption, and roots for DU hockey and Minnesota Twins baseball.

Meet   Mary-Signe Kelly - Certified Nurse Midwife

Close Midwife Profile
Mary-Signe Kelly - Midwife in Denver

Mary-Signe Kelly was born in Wisconsin, into a loving family who always supported her goals and dreams. After receiving a Bachelor of Science in Sociology from the University of Wisconsin, she traveled to Guatemala to study Spanish. While in Guatemala, she volunteered with a midwife and was introduced to the awesome experience of birth.

After returning to the US, she returned to school and graduated from the University of Miami with a nursing degree. It was during her obstetric rounds that she realized that many of the obstetric medical interventions were not always necessary and that women needed to understand all the implications of such interventions.

After finishing nursing school, she moved to Colorado, where she fell in love, first with the mountains and then with her husband, Michael. While working as a Labor and Delivery nurse for three years, assisting at over 300 births as a nurse using her skills in natural labor guiding women during their birth, she completed a Master's degree in Midwifery at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. She learned from midwives that normal, natural labor was possible even in the hospital setting. She believes empowering women is the most important aspect of midwifery.

Following graduation, she moved to the Philippines then to India. In India, she worked at Hyderabad's largest maternity centers educating nurses and doctors to provide more holistic and woman-centered birth. Later she worked at India's only free-standing birthing center which provided holistic midwifery care including natural childbirth, water birth and home visits.

Mary-Signe gave birth to her own son while in India. She had a water birth. The experiences of the pregnancy, birth, and of motherhood, including struggles with breastfeeding, have given her a greater understanding of what a midwife can do to help support women.

Mary-Signe is excited to be back in Colorado to share what she has learned abroad and to be able to provide holistic woman and family centered care. She feels every woman has the power to deliver her baby on her own terms, and through her care, help in this empowerment.
